Subject: !@#$% Extensions.
What is not mentioned in all this talk about maximum extensionage is how
many of the damned things are not an option. I do multimedia on my 20MB
IIcx and all these extensions are REQUIRED: QuickTime 1.5, the MacRecorder
driver, the (3) RasterOps extensions for my video board, Mode32 or the
32bit enabler and the Apple CD-ROM/Spped Switch extensions (for the CD300).
Oh yeah, the MIDI Manager for my sound module, ATM for font matching screen
to printer, extensions for my Global Village modem ...
I get random crashes when doing fills or imports in SuperPaint 3.0 that
no shareware or freebie init has touched. I would give up every
extension to not have crashes in the middle of important work. In fact, I
have a dozen commercial products I don't use because I can't stand inits -
Talking Moose 4.02, Stuffit SpaceSaver 1.04, Magic Menu 3.05, HandsOff II
2.2.6, etc. etc. etc. ALL of these are the absolute latest in commercial
products and they won't get along consistantly. Sigh.

If you think the irrepressible, incredible '040 vs 486 (also
Windows/DOS vs Mac) performance debate is fun, wait until this time
next year. I expect the WinNT (on a Pentium/Alpha) vs PowerPC
debates to be hilarious. The developers on both sides of the current
debate have been maneuvering to steal the other guy's argument next
time around, and I expect to enjoy using the PowerPC/PowerOpen "it's
faster, cheaper & gives you more control" argument against the WinNT
crowd. Let them try to make the "it's more expensive & slower, but
it's intrinsically nicer" argument work against a PowerPC running
MacOS, UNIX, & OS/2 simultaneously.
Of course, some shlockhouse clone manufacturer might just shoehorn a
Pentium chip into an ISA bus machine and sell it cheaper than a
PowerPC, but nobody's going to fall for that this time, will they?

Is this caused by the monitor or the computer video circuits ? Can anything

From: David Steiner <DSTEINER@dosuni1.rz.Uni-Osnabrueck.DE>
This is all well and good, but I download hqx files every day (just about)
using binary mode. In fact, for me, that is the only way it will work.
This
is due to the fact that there is no direct link between my ftp machine and
my Mac. If I transfer the hqx files as ascii, the IBM mainframe dutifully
converts everything to EBCDIC. Then, when I bring the files to the local
PC,
everything gets garbled no matter if I use binary or ascii mode for the
second download. If I do binary ftp and binary transfer to the PC all is
good
in the world.
So far, so good. Then, when you transfer from the PC to the Mac,
you use ASCII, all will be fine with the world.
The above process made sense to me since, despite the fact that ascii is
human readable (or at least printable), it is still a string of bits. If
the entire process is conducted in binary, the file should still end up as
an ascii file.
The only difference in the *content* of the file will probably be
how newlines are handled. Some systems want just a 0x0a byte,
others want 0x0f 0x0a, etc. Any decent hqx decoding program isn't
going to care about these differences.
However, Mac files also have file types. Files containing text are
of type TEXT. Binary files will be of some other type, but the programs
which accept binhex files expect only type TEXT.
Solution: Transfer them as text, at least at the last stage of
transfering them to the Mac.
The only thing that I can think of is that it has something to do with the
way the Mac interprets ascii. So, anyone out there want to enlighten this
confused soul?

Subject: Cricket Graph/HP Deskwriter crash!?
I've got a problem printing with Cricket Graph III on my HP Deskwriter that is
very curious. On my IIvx with (System 7.1, 32 bit addressing on, VM on or
off)
HP's 3.1 driver and background printing on, printing a graph appears to
initially spool properly. I then get a message box telling me to bring HP
Printmonitor to the front and the system promptly hangs completely. Selecting
the old 2.2 HP driver allows me to print but the y axis label looks like 42
point font!!
No problem; I copy the graph, paste it into Word 5.1, and crash; the same
thing happens when trying to print it. So I go back to Cricket Graph, save
the
graph as a PICT, insert it into Word with the Picture... command, and the same
thing happens. Rebuild the desktop, reinstall the HP 3.1 driver, run Norton
and
Virex with no luck. (I can print a Word 5.1 document with any other PICT
imported.) So finally I import the PICT of the graph into Cricket Draw III,
export that as a PICT, insert the new PICT into Word, and it prints fine.
(Actually vertical text is a bit jagged, but I've come to accept that with the
Deskwriter).
As the man said, there must be an easier way. Any insight would be
appreciated.

Subject: DiskCopy images vs. folders [R]
I read your question about making disk images from a folder. I am pretty
sure that there is no utility for it. There might be, but there is, almost by
definition, no reason for it: the only value of a disk image over a regular
archive (like a stuffit archive, or just a plain folder) is that the exact
sector layout of the original is maintained.
Since the sector layout of a folder on your harddrive is not relevant (or even
convertable) to a floppy, then the end result is no more useful than a drag
and dropped copy.
So far the only reason I have heard for having images at all is related to
self booting disks (e.g. system disks): When you mac boots, it has no
operating
system yet, so it doesn't know how to find things on disks. Rather than keep
a megabyte of system code in ROMs, they just have a specific place that OS
information is to be stored on a disk. Then your mac can just assume that if
the code isn't there, then it isn't on that disk at all.
This doesn't explain why you can make a system disk by dragging and dropping
system files - I suspect that the system is smart about itself, and does what
it can to make sure that when it is put on a disk, it is put in that special
place. This is just a hypothesis, though (time to dig up Inside Mac, I
guess..)
Disk images also do neet things like maintain the correct view, and icon
place-
ment, etc, of the original disk.

Subject: Equipment advice
It's that time of year again when we can bid for new toys - er sorry!
equipment. I'd be very grateful if anyone can give me advice on two
particular areas:
Apple LaserWriter Pro 630 v HP LaserJet 4M
We currently have a LaserWriter IINT, which is now showing its age. Now
600dpi printers are an affordable price, we can think of getting one. We
are a Cartographic Unit, producing mainly black & white maps and diagrams
(like you see in newspapers), and so our output is a mixture of fine
linework, tones and text (which can range from 3 or 4 (ish) pt to 100's of
point). At 600dpi, hopefully some work can be used as camera-ready copy for
journals. The educational prices for both printers are pretty close, so
this is not a big issue. Our building, and nearly all its computers (mostly
PCs) are ethernetted - the ability for PC users to produce high-resolution
output may help justify the purchase. How easy is it (and how much more
does it cost) to make the HP Ethernet-compatible? Will all ports still be
active at the same time? Is it really that easy for Mac and PC users to
share the same printer (Apple or HP)? Most importantly - which printer
gives the better quality?
Kodak Photo-CD (and Professional Photo CD)
We are just getting our DTP knees wet. We got to the toe-dipping stage with
Ready Set Go!, but have just retired it after 3 years good service, and
bought XPress. Ideally, we would like to control as much production as
possible in-house - including colour work, and produce plate-ready copy.
The department has a well-equipped Photographic Unit with two able
photographers. Using Photo CD (or Professional Photo CD, as our
photographers tend to use larger than 35mm format whenever they can) seems
to be the way to go - any comments? Assuming we get the Apple CD300 and
Adobe PhotoShop, are the range of Imagesetters available to us in our area
(Agfa 9400, Linotronics 200, 300 & 500, with the Agfa being the prefered
machine) capable of producing good- quality film separations, or do we need
to go to Scitex standard? I can see that in a couple of years time, we
could be producing a fair amount of full-colour DTP work.
Many thanks for any help

I'm not up on the latest legislation, but I don't believe that most
individuals pay sales tax on items ordered through the mail. I certainly
don't and there is a state sales tax in Washington State. That's one
reason people buy mail order - on large items the sales tax can get
a bit large, and it would through a dealer in your state. Here in
Washington many people drive down to Oregon to buy computers and the
like since Oregon has no sales tax, whereas Washington has a sales
tax, but no income tax.

I used the install program, specifying the PowerBook modem, as well as

If PCL/PS auto-switching is an important to you it would be worth
double-checking that the Apple models can do it. I just chose the HP
over the Apples because in my research I read that the Apple models
could emulate PCL but not do auto-switching. Sorry, I can't remember
the source of that information. I am pleased with the HP so far.

I seem to remember a discussion sometime ago about ways to "lock" hard disk
icons where you left them from one restart to the next. Does anybody know how
to do this?
Also, with all the drag-n-drop applications littering my desktop is there a
way
to make just the names appear (ie. with no icon) or reduce the icon size? I
also remember seeing this discussed but at the time I thought that there would
be no way I'd have that many utilities to bother about. I suppose another
monitor would solve the problem :-)

Waaah, it's such a drag to feel virtually obsolescent when what you got
was new as recently as 1988...oh well, there's all those Mac Plus users
who are even more beyond than I am with my SE 68000 / System 6.08 world
and preference for MacWrite (not II, the old one) and SuperPaint 1.0...
Well, weird tho it may seem, I got a friend with a less mainstream than
Mac type computer, an Amiga, which does COOL things with graphix, and
it would be nice to be able to borrow her disks, cuz my Photoshop (1.07)
oh so conveniently is ready and willing to deal with "AMIGA/IFF" images
whenever it can get to them. Those Amiga owners can buy a complete
Mac emulation package and read/write Mac disks; all I want is a bit of
Apple File Exchange and/or instructions to my SuperDrive or Infiniti
Floptical drive that will tell them how to read one of them Amiga disks.
Anyone got relevant info? (If so, don't forget that my mind is still
fundamentally fonder of a world in which "Use Minifinder" is under the
"Special" menu and things are nice and SIMPLE).

In response to my recent request for a "more" for the Mac, i've been
inundated with replies. Thanks to all who replied and my apologies for not
replying personally. In lieu of that and in response to a request i'll
summarise the results :
Essentially i was looking for a file-viewer in order to examine megabyte
level plain text files. Editing capability is irrelevant. The answer i
recieved can be grouped thus ...
* Use MPW shell. Quite a popular option, although admittedly you have to
have MPW. Although the editor isn't great, this doesn't matter if you just
want to view the file.
* Use Word 5.1. Having not used Word 5 (only 4) i can't speak for this. It
was claimed by two respondants that Word should handle practically any
sized file without difficulty. Of course you have to allocate the
appropriate amount of memory ... other respondants claimed that Words
performance would be suboptimal.
* Use BBedit. Apparently BB will use the free memory of your machine to
handle the file (which would be handy, not having to increase the
application memory).
* "Any word processor should be able to handle it given enough memory".
Although i haven't exhaustively tried every editor, i can vouch that
Nisus, the various MacWrites, WordPerfect, Alpha and a number of others
will just refuse to open a megabyte size file or do so with excruiating
slowness regardless of the amount of memeory you allocate to them. Others
experience may be different.
At the moment BBedit looks the best. Ideally a text viewer that has only a
small memory footprint regardless of the size of the file would be the
best but i've put that on the input queue ... :^)

To those of you who who have been asking about word games, Word Connection is
soon to be released. However it needs a little more testing from a few
interested souls...
Word Connection is a thought provoking word search game designed for
children and adults. 3 shapes x 3 sizes = 9 puzzle boards. Endless
puzzle combinations and a wide range of difficulty levels will
challenge your mind, polish spelling skills and introduce new words.
The game also includes hints, solutions and definitions. Minimum system
required is a Mac Plus and System 6.0.7.
Although countless hours have already been spent testing Word Connection, it
would be nice to have a larger audience to do a little more testing. Any
volunteers? No experience necessary! You will be asked to complete and
return
a questionnaire about the game within a week of receiving test materials.
If you are interested in testing, please respond with your name, mailing

Caught some folks griping about VAT (value added tax) charged on
European stuff. Don't forget, people: the prices you see listed in
American mail-order listing are *WITHOUT* tax. European taxes are
indeed higher, but we in the USA still pay 7%-10%.
Maybe SOME of you do. I don't think I've seen higher than 7%
anywhere in the country, myself. Next door in New Hampshire,
the rate is 0%. That happens to be where Mac Connection is.
Here in Massachusetts, which was widely ridiculed as "Taxachusetts"
a while back, it's only 5%.
I think the theory of VAT is that they tax it when it goes out,
rather than when you get it. (I couldn't say whether it actually
displaces any income tax, however; I haven't seen national breakdowns
by TYPE of tax). But we Americans shouldn't assume (without further
information) that a higher VAT means that prices are higher, since
the overall tax structure is very different. Comparisons like
this are difficult.
I think the people who are subtracting off the VAT and quoting it
separately (which most people seem to be doing) are doing
the right thing. Compare the prices without taxes, and evaluate
the taxes seperately.

A newly released file synchronization utility called FileRunner(tm) would do
what you what, I think. FileRunner would even let you edit the copies on
the floppies if you want to, alternatively it can compress the files on the
floppies so you can pack more on. And FileRunner is licensed to the
individual, so that you only need one copy for managing *your* files (on any
number of CPUs). There are FileRunner versions for both Mac and
DOS/Windows.
